10Bookplates: The Earliest Apps- A Discussion with Dr. Ezra Shales Bookplates: The Earliest Apps- A Discussion with Dr. Ezra Shales Thursday, October 19, 1:30 p.m. $10; $8 Friend of Morven Morven Museum & Garden is honored to feature this special presentation by Dr. Ezra Shales, Professor, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and author of Made in Newark: Cultivating Industrial Arts and Civic Identity in the Progressive Era, a book influential in the creation of our current exhibition Newark and the Culture of Art: 1900-1960. In Bookplates: The Earliest Apps, Dr. Shales invites us to contemplate the ephemerality of Apps (the pocket-sized, non-edible, smart-device variety), through which we perceive all sorts of short-lived ideological messages intertwining capitalism with aesthetic decisions. In looking back 100 years, the bookplate might have been the artifact to bear the closest resemblance to the size of today's digital screens. Discover how the "slip of paper" bookplate was also a dynamic tool for public marketing and self-invention and usually just as susceptible to obsolescence. Looking at bookplates made by the Newark Public Library and Museum Association, institutions intertwined from 1909-1925, join us as we revisit these miniature, magical posters - predecessors of today's ubiquitous Apps. Made in Newark will be available for sale and signing following Dr. Shales’ presentation. evdb2017-07-26 09:07:062017-10-19 13:30:00

1Wynonna & the Big Noise Wynonna, along with her band The Big Noise, will explore the past, present and future of Wynonna’s extensive 33-year career on the 2017 Roots & Revival Tour. Wynonna & The Big Noise, led by husband/drummer/producer, Cactus Moser, released their debut full-length album in February 2016 via Curb Records to critical acclaim. Wynonna has described the new sound as “vintage yet modern” and a “return to the well.” It’s a rootsy work encompassing country, Americana, blues, soul and rock. NPR’s Ann Powers noted that, “With her tight band behind her after touring together for several years, she just sounds like she’s home…You can just feel the grin on her face.”evdb2017-02-01 11:02:122017-10-08 19:00:00

6Concert Across America to Prevent Gun Violence Robinson Treacher / Kate Copeland he Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County 687 Larch Avenue Teaneck, NJ 07666 For more info: www.ethicalbrew.org or call, 201-836-5187    ETHICAL BREW is a live music venue located in Teaneck, NJ, dedicated to serving up a quality blend of folk & indie performers in an intimate and welcoming environment. Fifty percent of the proceeds from each show are allocated to funding worthy social action projects and charities selected by the Artist. The remaining 50% fund progessive projects of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County. Past beneficiaries include whyhunger, Edeyo Foundation (Haiti), Heifer International, Bergen County Sanctuary Committee, Ramapo-Bergen Animal Sanctuary, Doctors Without Borders, Earthjustice.  Ethical Brew is proud to present Live In Concert: Concert Across America to Prevent Gun Violence Robinson Treacher / Kate Copeland Note: FREE SHOW AT 3PM This is the second annual event. Last year 5,225 artists at 350 events in 43 states came together to unite us through music. This year, Ethical Brew is proud to host this event on behalf of the Bergen County Brady Chapter.About the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence:Brady has committed to the bold goal of cutting the number of U.S. gun deaths in half by 2025. Our innovative strategy centers on the idea of keeping guns out of the wrong hands through three impact-driven campaigns: (1) Applying life-saving Brady background checks to all gun sales; (2) Stopping "Bad Apple" gun dealers, the 5 percent of gun dealers that supply 90 percent of all crime guns; and (3) Leading a new national conversation about the real dangers of guns in the home aimed at changing social norms in order to prevent the homicides, suicides and unintentional shootings that happen literally every day.   Robinson Treacher If entertainment can be defined as an agreeable occupation of the mind, then Robinson Treacher has found a way to encompass this in every aspect of his contribution to music-kind. Whether playing the role as front man to the soul-rock infused Delaware Hudson, as co-collaborator to the Alt-Country based Tensleep, or as a solo singer/songwriter, Treacher seems to drain himself of energy in the ceaseless pursuit of portraying moments of musical passion. This passion is evident in every attempt he makes to involve us, the listeners, in the spiritual orchestrations of emotion that have been meticulously tempered into songs.Just like the long list of New York City artists before him, Robinson feeds off the honest grit found among the "huddled masses"...coupling the blatantly obvious (to a New Yorker at least) with the deeply personal. Chameleon-like in his approach to his songwriting, he refuses to be pigeonholed into one particular genre. Believing that each song is forged from its own unique terrain, he takes great pains in choosing the vehicle by which passengers might best weatherthe bumps, potholes, and blind curves found between the first note and the last. Admittedly susceptible to the affectations of the senses himself, he asks his audience to participate emotionally as well as physically in a "whole self " conceptual challenge, a 360 degree soul search comprised of the most joyous elation to the bitterest of pains. With the emergence of a true "world" community of listeners and the dissolving of the old guard record company elitists, Treacher's eclectic songwriting can be allowed to burgeon...flowing freely among the throngs of liberated music enthusiasts...authentic and unabashed in its purity and form. For more about Robinson Treacher: www.robinsontreacher.com   Kate Copeland Kate Copeland is an award-winning singer/songwriter composer/arranger based out of New York City. A graduate of Oberlin Conservatory's composition program, she has worked in the studio with a variety of artists in addition to putting out her own music. Some recent production credits include Abakis' "I'm One Too" (2014), General Mojo's "How Hollow A Heart" EP (2016), and Mike O'Malley's "Growlers" EP (2016). She released her first solo album, "recollection room," in June 2015, and her follow-up EP "Red and Blue" in May 2016. Most recently ASCAP declared her this year's winner of the prestigious Robert Allen Award. For more information about Kate Copeland: katecopelandmusic.com evdb2017-07-22 08:05:222017-09-24 15:00:00

In the fall semester, we will read sections of the Quran as a primary key to understanding the values and beliefs of Islam. We will compare the Quran’s references to biblical characters such as Abraham, Ishmael, Moses and Ezra. Dr. Regina Stein is the Morris Kaplan Scholar-in-Residence at the Museum at Eldridge Street. She has taught for Temple Emanu-El’s Skirball Center for Adult Jewish Learning, the Wexner Heritage Foundation, CLAL, the Jewish Theological Seminary, the Bronfman Youth Fellowships in Israel, the Academy for Jewish Religion, and the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem. 10Conflict Management from the Bible to Today Ever since Jacob fought Esau, Rebecca competed with Leah, and Moses fought the whole recalcitrant Hebrew people, people have been at odds with each other. Parents with children. Children with parents. Spouses and partners with each other. And not to overlook tensions at work and with our friends. How do we navigate these conflicts? What are best practices? Non-combative interactive discussion led by Rabbi Peter. 5Emanuel Ax, Piano Daring invention, profound emotion, sizzling virtuosity, and flowing lyricism are all key elements in this program that spans Bach to Liszt. Emanuel Ax is “an extremely satisfying pianist; he is at home in a wide variety of music, and his pianism is always thoughtful, lyrical, lustrous” (The Washington Post). Mozart’s drama, Liszt’s poetry, Bach’s precision, and Beethoven’s brio are showcased by one of the great pianists of our day.evdb2017-01-27 21:30:372018-05-10 20:00:00
