1Jews and Muslims: The Early Years Investigate the early encounters between Jews and Muslims as we explore the origins of Islam in the Arabian Peninsula beginning in the 7th century. In the fall semester, we will read sections of the Quran as a primary key to understanding the values and beliefs of Islam. We will compare the Quran’s references to biblical characters such as Abraham, Ishmael, Moses and Ezra. Dr. Regina Stein is the Morris Kaplan Scholar-in-Residence at the Museum at Eldridge Street. She has taught for Temple Emanu-El’s Skirball Center for Adult Jewish Learning, the Wexner Heritage Foundation, CLAL, the Jewish Theological Seminary, the Bronfman Youth Fellowships in Israel, the Academy for Jewish Religion, and the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies in Jerusalem. 3ELIADES OCHOA In Cuba's mountainous eastern region, far from Havana's pre-revolution nightlife, Eliades Ochoa's musical roots were formed in the Cuban countryside and from the music of his family's humble farm community. Playing guitar since age 6, Eliades was raised listening to the stories of those times, playing at farmers dances, and developing his expressive, unaffected musical style.

Salsa and mambo dance rhythms are vintage Cuba, but Eliades' indigenous son style is where syncopated clave rhythms and short vocal refrains suggest the true story of Cuba's troubadour legacy and the divergence of African and Hispanic cultures. In Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club, Eliades' memorable voice in the son composition Chan Chan symbolized Cuba's international musical revival and the song was the first track on the group's eponymous album of 1997.

In 2018, Eliades will tour in the U.S. with Grupo Patria, a band founded in 1939 and now led by Eliades and infused with his sense of musical adventure.

4CHUCHO VALDES FEATURING SPECIAL GUESTS

Winner of six Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards, the Cuban pianist, composer, arranger and bandleader Chucho Vald*s has been a key figure in the evolution of Afro-Cuban jazz for the past 50 years. His musical education includes formal studies and countless nights on the best stages in Cuba as the pianist with his father, Bebo Vald*s, and his orchestra Sabor de Cuba, and also the seminal Orquesta Cubana de M*sica Moderna. In the early 70s, Chucho distilled this experiences into the foundation of Irakere, an ensemble that marked a before and after in Afro-Cuban jazz. Chucho was the director, pianist, main composer and arranger of Irakere for more than 30 years. But since 2005, he has focused on his personal career, highlighting his work as a pianist and leading small ensembles. His 2014 recording, Border-Free, finds Chucho at the top of his game, leading his Afro-Cuban Messengers, a spectacular quintet comprising yet another generation of young brilliant Cuban musicians, in a search that transcends styles and traditions. In conjunction with the U.S. tour in 2015, Chucho Vald*s: Irakere 40 released Live at Marciac (Jazz Village/Harmonia Mundi) recorded at the Jazz in Marciac festival in France.

In 2017-2018 Chucho and his quartet will dazzle audiences worldwide with both their traditional and symphonic programs.

7Paths to Presence: Exploring MeditationThis weekly meditation class is dedicated to exploring a variety of meditation techniques while building community. Meditation is often taught as just one thing: sitting on a zafu while focusing on your breath and clearing your mind. This is just one technique. In this weekly offering, we get creative, for while meditation can benefit everyone, there are many paths to presence and mindful living. In working with multiple techniques, you’ll gain a greater understanding of what works best for you and how to most easily incorporate mindful awareness into your everyday life. Each class begins with 30 minutes of individual meditation, followed by 30 minutes of social meditation and 30 minutes of community socializing. Meditation techniques vary week to week. Examples of individual meditation techniques include sitting, walking, breathing, guided, sound and mantra meditation. Examples of social meditation techniques include co-listening, group sharing, supportive presence, and intuitive body awareness exercises. We mix things up. You find your way. ABOUT VIRGINIA MASON RICHARDSON Virginia emphasizes discovery through experience rather than teaching through telling. Her background in human evolution, philosophy and dance led her to explore increasingly mysterious ideas, and she founded Fleeting Connections to help guide others as they embrace their own curiosity. Her practice uses yoga, Reiki, tarot, astrology and storytelling as tools to shift perspectives of reality and guide people toward a greater understanding of their own truth.Virginiaf143f2017-02-25 12:47:282017-11-26 17:00:00

1La Vie Magnifique de Charlie (aka The Charlie Movie) Film ScreeningFrench-inspired celebration of Black Girl Magic, "La Vie Magnifique de Charlie" (aka #thecharliemovie), will make its New York premiere at the African Diaspora International Film Festival with two screenings at Columbia University. A proven audience favorite, the debut feature film from Bobby Huntley II has been racking up awards including Best New Filmmaker Award, Best Narrative Feature and Outstanding Narrative Feature on the festival circuit. "Charlie" is a timely and exquisite exploration of the power of sisterhood and the beauty of #BlackGirlMagic, hoping to widen the narrow scope of the portrayals of black women in media. The film is a dramedy about one young woman’s struggle to remain carefree – even after the death of the love of her life: her sister. Everyone is taken aback by Charlie’s unorthodox and seemingly chipper approach to her grieving process. Follow Charlie and her friends Kayla and Keturah as they go along for a wild, hilariously exhilarating and bittersweet ride – which will surely be the craziest day of Charlie’s life. (Some of the topics covered in the film are mental health, sickle cell and female sexual empowerment.) Filmmaker Bobby Huntley II will be in attendance and participate in a Q&A following each screening. ABOUT THE FILM - "Charlie" made its film festival debut in Atlanta, where Huntley resides, at the prestigious BronzeLens Film Festival, presented by Turner Broadcasting, in August. "When we filmed the movie, we had no budget, but as a collective of artists we wanted to come together to create something unique, and vibrant, and timeless," Huntley said. Part of that stems from the bold look of the film, which was inspired by the early films of Spike Lee, Prince and Madonna. The quirky French aesthetic was influenced by the 2001 classic "Amelie" and includes a funky Minneapolis sound-infused score by acclaimed music producer Chuckey Charles. What sets "Charlie" apart is that the film is captured from the lens of a black woman – cinematographer Lakisha Hughes. The result is an interesting world where the aesthetics of throwback 1980s gritty New York have been combined with present day Atlanta flair and flourishes of whimsy in this heartwarming tale of love between sisters. The film stars first-time actor Kortnee Price in a breakthrough performance as the quirky and lovable central character, Charlie. She is supported by her best friends portrayed by Nikki Lashae, Lailaa Brookings, and Ashley S. Evans, starring as her sister Brandy. At the helm of "Charlie" is award-winning Director/Writer Bobby Huntley II and fellow creative Nikki Wade, known for together creating the viral fan-made trailer for "The New Edition Story," which garnered several million views and eventually would lay the groundwork that led to the highly-rated (unassociated) BET miniseries. "Charlie" is executive produced by Chet A. Brewster of Davenstar 1 Entertainment; Nikki Wade produces via Divadom Entertainment. 9Mahan Esfahani, Harpsichord One of the most gifted harpsichordists of our time explores two centuries of music from Italy, France, Germany, and Bohemia in his Carnegie Hall debut. Frescobaldi’s wild flights of invention made him one of the most celebrated Italian composers of the 17th century and influenced composers across the continent. A century later, the refined beauty of Rameau’s keyboard music represented the pinnacle of the French tradition. Bach drew from all traditions—the Italian and early French styles—to create the finest keyboard music of the Baroque.
