1First Fridays For Seniors : The Big Band Era, Eastern Branch, Monmouth County Library SystemThe 1930s was the decade of the great big bands of American jazz. This discussion includes the stylistic differences of bands of that era due to race, location and other influences. Audio and video examples include, among others, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman and Harry James. Presented by Stephen F. Marcone Professor of Music and Chairperson, The William Paterson College of New Jersey. He is the author of Managing Your Band, soon to be in its 6th edition, and is a frequent lecturer for the NJ Council on the Humanities. 3RENT In 1996, an original rock musical by a little-known composer opened on Broadway and forever changed the landscape of American theatre. Two decades later, Jonathan Larson’s RENT continues to speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations and all over the world. And now, this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®-winning masterpiece returns to the stage in a vibrant 20th anniversary touring production. A re-imagining of Puccini's La Bohème, RENT follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out.evdb2016-06-17 13:23:322017-05-05 00:00:00

A Dark Comedy by BECK LEEDirected by JASON JACOBSSUBPRIME In Subprime two Minneapolis couples travel to the Big Apple for a bargain vacation nobody can afford. Set in the summer of 2008, when many Americans studiously ignored all the signs that the economy was tanking, Subprime introduces us to four normal, nice, and intelligent Minnesotans who are in complete denial about almost everything -- from the sorry state of their finances, their marriages, their careers and even their personal identities. In the course of an evening in a midtown Manhattan hotel (that gets increasingly debauched as the night wears on) the cheery and secure veneer of their lives is stripped away.Dark Comedy. 6Celebrate Spring and Color and Health! Come celebrate the launch of "Color x Health: Affordable Housing Starts with Healthier Spaces” A partnership between Healthy Materials Lab and New York City Housing Authority “Color x Health: Affordable Housing Starts with Healthier Spaces” is a publication intended to engage public and affordable housing residents and decision makers in a discussion about the relationship between color and human health. Paint is the first step towards creating healthier homes and early childhood centers. "When people have a chance to participate in the shaping of their environment, there is an increased sense of belonging and ownership which leads to personal investment in one’s space."  Design is about decision making. Decision makers have the ability to make healthier environments for living and learning. This publication provides a simple guide for choosing color palettes and better paints. It’s also a guide to be used by residents in the design process to choose paint colors, to become advocates for their own health, and to create places they feel they belong. The event will be held in the Lower Level Event Cafe in The New School University Center. evdb2017-04-23 07:45:102017-05-02 18:00:00

7From Paris To New York, French Soul & Jazz Feat. Violette

Born in Paris but raised in Ars-en-Re, a small village on an island off the French Atlantic Coast, and now making her home in Brooklyn, NY, Singer-songwriter Violette began her musical journey at an early age, taking up the piano at five and later learning percussion while at a Parisian Conservatory. Her musical endeavors were clearly colored by influences from such French luminaries as Jacques Brel and Edith Piaf but quickly found her tastes and palette ranging much farther than her home. Soon her speakers were filled with the sounds of Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, and Michael Jackson, all artists whose sound would have a hand in the development of her sophisticated pop sound.

After completing a Liberal Arts degree in France, the artist headed to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, fine tuning her skills in arranging and performance. And as those skills grew, greater opportunities to perform came along, offering her the chance to perform all across the world, gracing stages everywhere from the U.S. and France to Dubai and Thailand, earning comparisons to artists like Norah Jones, Zaz, and Adele.

Her latest album, "Falling Strong" was produced by Brian Bacchus (Norah Jones, Lizz Wright, Gregory Porter), mixed by Jay Newland (Norah Jones, Sly Johnson), and mastered by Mark Wilder (Bob Dylan, Jane Monheit, Miles Davis), the record showcases a collection of originals that, although rooted in jazz, reflect the young artist’s eclectic range of musical influences from pop to rock and R&B. At once upbeat and sassy, sensual and intimate, her soulful voice immerses you in the heart of a genuine emotional experience.

Violette delivers that experience, one that transcends the bounds both musically and in its reach, appeals to listeners from all walks of life. Songs like “All My Life” deliver lyrics of love and devotion while a track like “Falling Strong” shines with the influence of multi-instrumentalist and guest vocalist, Louis Cato, showcasing a broad spectrum of sound.

As the artist’s stock continues to rise, it doesn’t seem likely that she’ll have to opt for implementing her back up plan of becoming a pastry chef. Rather, with the rise that she’s on, it’s more likely that her longtime dream of becoming a “Bond girl” is bound to happen. But until then, Violette is set to keep delighting audiences with her rich, sophisticated pop and charm.

1C.Macleod
Its rare nowadays to come across an artist unhurried by technology, telling stories through song, simply for the pure joy of it. Isle of Lewis native, C.Macleod however, is doing just that. Living far away from the bright lights and never ending rush of city life, a chance slot supporting Ethan Johns (on a tour of the Highlands in 2013) resulted in the pair working to create a timeless and remarkable debut album, due 2017.

2Judas Priestess
JUDAS PRIESTESS The World's ONLY All-Girl Tribute to the Metal Gods, JUDAS PRIEST, is a rock phenomenon! Formed in 2009, this striking group of leather and chain-clad, multi-talented, NYC based women rockers has created a world-wide reputation, complete with rave reviews from music critics, adoring fans, and has the blessing of the Metal God himself, Judas Priest front man Rob Halford on VH1 Classic's popular That Metal Show. Legendary Judas Priest guitarist, KK Downing, featured the group on the Third Anniversary of his Steel Mill website, which called them Metal's top female tribute! Al Atkins, original Judas Priest vocalist and co-author of Victim of Changes contacted the band to say "You women rock - fantastic version of Victim!" As the press quotes attest, this band has numerous feature articles and has been written about in publications such as MTV.com, Guitar World, Blabbermouth, Decibel, High Times, New York Press, and many others. In two short years, JUDAS PRIESTESS has performed at many festivals, motorcycle rallies, charities and special events. The band shared the stage with Twisted Sister at Dee Snider's Bikers for Babies charity rally for the March of Dimes in Long Island, NY and they have opened up for legendary pioneers of doom metal, Pentagram. In Spring 2011, Cape Fear Harley Davidson sponsored JUDAS PRIESTESS performance at North Carolina's Rock Shop Music Hall and they immediately followed that date as the headline attraction opening weekend at Myrtle Beach Bike Week in South Carolina - a triumphant return for the band at SBB 4-Corners. Myrtle Beach Bike Week is one of the four top biker events in the U.S.A. with over 300,000 people from around the world attending. At Harley Bike Week the band was such a hit that they scored the cover of The Sun News KICKS! Section (June 17, 2011) in an article about the world?s best tribute bands that perform in that international tourist mecca, Myrtle Beach. The band also captured the attention of new 'biker' show, "Ride On America" and is featured in an episode. In September 2011, JUDAS PRIESTESS headlined the Indian Larry Motorcycles Block Party in Brooklyn, NY, the annual day-long outdoor event that memorializes one of the motorcycle world's most acclaimed, creative and beloved icons, Indian Larry.October 2011 they headlined a special Halloween event in NYC's iconic Penn Station, sharing the spotlight with world famous Madame Tussand's, and Broadway's "Rock of Ages", among others, as 100,000 commuters passed through the train station during the rush-hours. JUDAS PRIESTESS headlined HIXONFEST in NYC (2010) with Richard Christie of Iced Earth and the Howard Stern show jamming on drums with the band onstage. The band also headlined Massachusetts's first all-girl band festival Metal Galz Rule! The band's spectacular front woman, MilitiA, has been called by the French Music Press "the true cross between Rob Halford and Tina Turner". MilitiA has been Dee Snider's lead vocalist in his heavy metal orchestra "Van Helsing's Curse"; has toured Europe with Jesus Christ Superstar; has performed with Nancy Sinatra, Cyndi Lauper, Taylor Dayne, Sandra Bernhard, among other known musical artists. MilitiA's vocal prowess and stunning stage presence combined with the impressive and stellar musicians that comprise Judas Priestess:D Mercedes (founder) on lead guitar, was also the founder/guitarist of the groundbreaking NY punk/early hardcore group The Stimulators and spent 2 years rocking out in the well-known all-girl Motley Crue tribute Girls Girls Girls! before starting Judas Priestess. Extraordinary Bad Brains bassist Darryl Jenifer considers D Mercedes "one of my guitar heroes." Bassist Gyda Gash (founder) has a long-standing solid gold reputation as the first lady of doom from her days in Angel Rot and has many laudable and interesting achievements under her belt. JoSette on 2nd guitar, a member since late 2010, comes with a renowned reputation as a 'kick ass female guitarist." She got her rock training in her first band, the all-girl Hari Kari managed by Eric Carr from KISS. Jojo Tubeato, one of the most astounding rock drummers in metal, was a member of the original JUDAS PRIESTESS lineup. JoJo was featured in Modern Drummer and had been in the 80's all-girl group Missdemeanor. Replacing her behind the kit in 2012 will be the double bass pounding heavy metal drum goddess Hillary Blaze from the Boston based all-girl band Jaded. Ms. Blaze is notorious for "bringing the FIRE" and the thunder!

4Reception honoring Donna Drewes, a creative placemaking local hero Join us for a fun reception honoring Donna Drewes, who has recently retired as co-director of Sustainable Jersey.   Donna co-chaired the Sustainable Jersey Arts and Creative Culture Task Force, which has developed guidelines and incentives for municipalities in New Jersey to do creative placemaking.  The 'actions' cover a wide range of topics -- from building a creative team to preparing a creative placemaking plan. Municipalities that take these steps not only enhance their work, they also get more points toward their certification. This reception is hosted by New Jersey Creative Placemakers, a new professional network of creative placemakers living or working in Jersey. evdb2017-02-26 10:19:012017-05-05 16:00:00

6Gay History Walking Tour of Greenwich Village Gay History Walking Tour of Greenwich Village

Meet at a historic gay watering hole for a two-hour walking tour that delves a little deeper than the basics. For instance, everyone knows about the Stonewall riots of 1969, but few people know that more than 40 years earlier Mae West was arrested in Manhattan for producing a pro-gay-rights play. Or that Walt Whitman read his homoerotic poems aloud to friends at a bar on Broadway. Professor Andrew Lear designed this tour to bring New York's fascinating gay history out of the closet. Greenwich Village has been the center of many of the city's countercultures and artistic movements, from the Bohemians of the World War I period to the Beats, the Abstract Expressionists, the New York School, Pop Art, the creators of off- (and off-off-) Broadway, and of course the gay liberation movement. Visit the sites of the drag shows and gay bars that have enjoyed a home in the Village for 150 years. The list of LGBT greats you'll learn about reads like a history of American culture: Herman Melville and Henry James, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Eleanor Roosevelt, James Baldwin, Allen Ginsberg and Andy Warhol.
